Upcoming Shows (2022):

Rustic meets Glam in Tunnel No 5 in Karkloof this  April!

The Old Mushroom Farm is delighted to present a musical soirée-theater type evening on Saturday the 30th April.
Posh, passionate and playful is how this show is described.
For this elegant evening, Barbie Meyer, teams up with her partner in piano-crime, Jonathan Brauteseth.
Hailing from opposite ends of the coastline,
Barbie & Jonathan have become something of an institution in the music and performance industry around the country. They have been performing together for many years countrywide and form a formidable, hilarious and unique pair.
Totally at ease with each other other’s quirks they pair up to offer both haunting and playful duets. This is interspersed with hilarious bits of information about the ridiculousness of humanity seen through their eyes, each other and the lyrics they perform. Barbie & Jonathan appear to have the perfect recipe for performing heart felt lyrics whilst simultaneously providing improvised stand-up comedy with a dash of poetry between songs. These are two very different personalities with an enchanting connection.
Barbie is an actress yet admits that her first love is singing. This is immediately evident in the power and passion with which she delivers their perfectly chosen songs. Her voice together with Jonathan’s deep, gravelly tones has been described as ‘pouring double thick cream over rather roughly chopped mango’.

So don a pair of posh heels, slip on a crisp shirt and don’t miss out on an intimate evening of classy musical entertainment.
The Bistro will be open before the Show if you would like to have a bite to eat.
All are welcome to bring you own drinks & glasses - ’preferably crystal’, Barbie says!

Review from “Piano @ Leonardo” – Pretoria by Shannon Taylor.
“…Barbie Meyer and Jonathan Brauteseth gave a performance of epic proportions, performing heart wrenching duets while simultaneously providing stand-up comedy throughout. These two are an act not to be overlooked; their powerful voices are utterly captivating, totally enchanting, they hold the audience completely in their grasp. It has been a long time since I have seen a pair more connected with their audience and singing from the very depth of the soul.”

Meyer’s use of pauses and impeccable comedic timing are what sets her apart as a top storyteller. Her unpretentious style, tangible passion for these stories and love for this genre of storytelling simply oozes out of her every pore when she is on the stage, pulling the audience right into the veld with her.
Meyer has been recognised as something of a Bosman fundi and has performed her plays countrywide.

Whether you have read Bosman’s works or not, Meyer’s compilation of his stories in “Marico Moon” will no doubt delight and surprise you. It is challenging, delightfully written and eminently entertaining.

Meyer has succeeded in mastering the distinctive flat accent of the Groot Marico. Her use of pauses and impeccable comedic timing are what sets her apart as a top storyteller. Her unpretentious style and her tangible passion for the stories and love for this sort of storytelling simply oozes out of her every pore when she is on the stage, pulling the audience right into the veld with her.

Meyer has been recognised as something of a Bosman fundi and has performed her plays at many venues, festivals and intimate settings around the country.

Expect comical and witty storytelling through the mouth of a rather quirky blonde ‘Oom Schalk’ as well as through the eyes of Herman Charles Bosman himself. A little romantic, a little wistful, affected with the madness of the Marico moon but of course always touched with Bosman’s unmistakable irony, humour and wit.

“Bosman’s Veld Maiden” is an intoxicating blend of humour, irony & wit.

Alluring Marico ghosts, countless bottles of mampoer and elusive romances – both funny and enthralling - this is undoubtedly South African storytelling at its best!

Herman Charles Bosman’s hilarious short stories are brought to life by the comical veld maiden herself – Barbie Meyer.

Herman Charles Bosman (1905-1951) was a South African writer and journalist who became famous for capturing the rhythms of backveld Afrikaans speech even though he wrote in English. He is widely regarded as the greatest short story writer to come out of this country. His books are some of the finest in the field of South-African literature.

“Everyone loves a good story and no-one wrote them quite as beautifully, insightfully and downright hilariously as Bosman”, says blonde Barbie Meyer with a passionate twinkle in her eye.

After seeing Patrick Mynhardt transformed into Oom Schalk on the stage and hearing him tell Bosman’s intrinsically South African short stories, Barbie Meyer never quite saw the world in the same way again. “Quite simply I was hooked from an early age” she laughs. Barbie had the privilege of meeting and performing alongside Patrick in his latter years.

One senses that the Bosman stories that Meyer performs will be filled with hilarity, beauty, passion, irony and wit - words which Meyer constantly uses to describe his work.

As with Meyer’s previous shows; she has been able to bring to life a balanced and highly palatable assortment of this famous author’s short stories, essays and poetry. Tasty titbits about Bosman’s Bohemian and rather controversial life have been woven into the work and the show is suitable for all ages.
Bosman’s Veld Maiden is directed by the evergreen Bets Basson.

So expect comical and witty storytelling through the mouth of an attractive blonde khaki boer as well as through the eyes of a veld maiden. A little romantic, a tad sensual but of course touched with Bosman’s unmistakable twists in the tail…and tales!
The show is all in English.
